A training course for adults to help support youth
Some of the statistics around Youth Mental Health are staggering. When you realise that 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness and that 75% of mental health problems occur before the age of 25, you know that something needs to be done to help young people!
Many adults are not confident or knowledgeable to offer assistance to young people when the signs of a mental illness may be emerging, which is why this course for ADULTS has been developed to help.
About the course
The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is an accredited course developed by Mental Health First Aid Australia. It is developed for adults working or living with adolescents (those aged between 12 and 18 years), however, the course can be relevant for those helping people who are a little younger or older.
Adults learn how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental illness, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
Who should attend?
This course is particularly suitable for adults who support or work with young people, such as teachers, school wellbeing officers, sports coaches, youth workers and support staff, community leaders and the police.
What the course covers
The course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Course participants learn about:
- adolescent development,
- the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people,
- where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness,
- what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and
- how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
Course Format
This is a 14 hour course, which will be delivered in a 2 day training package (7 hours per day) in a classroom interactive group session. Course participants receive a copy of the Youth Mental Health First Aid Manual to keep and a Certificate of Completion.

The Rotary Clubs of Brighton North and Hampton are offering complimentary places to the Youth Mental Health First Aid course for interested adults who work with, or support young people and would like to better understand the signs and causes of youth mental illnesses and assist young people when in need.
Please note that only a limited number of places are available and should the course be oversubscribed, we will add names to a waiting list and advise of subsequent dates during the year.
About the organisers
The Rotary Club of Brighton North and Rotary Club of Hampton are jointly partnering to offer this course to selected adults in Bayside.
Rotary has a long history of developing and supporting youth and this mental health program forms part of a commitment from both Clubs to develop a series of training courses that help improve and support the mental health of our youth.
